Posted this question in the Business Forum and got no response.

I ran into this website: photolinks.com. They say that by linking to their directory of photo related links, my web site will get more traffic. Is this a scam . . .does it work? Is there a downside?

Typically, the sites that link to your site, and vice versa, it will help your site get searchable, but so does adding keywords and meta tags to your site, as well as adding your sites to search engines:
Google Webmaster Central
Webmaster Center - Bing

read those sites, and learn how to help your search results...

this is just a directory it's not worth paying for though there are thousands of web directories you could list your site in for free. this site is not a 'scam' just not worth paying for.

the likelihood of you getting traffic directly from this directory is going to be slim to none. because their are thousands and thousands of sites listed in the directory. the chances of someone coming across your site link would be slim to none

there free option is ok but requires a reciprocal link or a link back to their site from your site. reciprocal linking use to help your rankings in google a lot but now the value of a reciprocal link is quite low and barely worth the time of filling out the form

getting links pointing to your site is a great way to boost your rankings in google but directory links have a lot less value or power than say a blog that links to you that is related to what your site is about.

hope that helps
