Cool A hobby project of mine, Artevolve (site for artists/photographers + remixing) - 03-09-2010, 03:19 AM

Still working on the site and haven't official release it, but here's a peek at it at Artevolve - Home for your Creative Work

I got the idea ccMixter and github, except the same derivative/remixing idea applied to artwork/photography. The site has all the usual features like uploading and hosting the artwork/photos (unlimited storage, plus you can attach RAW, psd, zips, etc per each submission), commenting, voting, forums, portfolios, profiles, etc.. and yet to add an api/rss, facebook intergration, push/pull to other sites, and hope to add features once I have a user base to their needs.

The unique feature of the project is remixing/deriving aspect: where users can remix and derive each other's submissions, and the site would keep track of the derivatives and view the evolution of a artwork over time. For example, I upload a photo, then you can download it, modify and improve it, and upload it back again... and the site would keep track. Example. Artevolve - Loner Moped by Janitha K Of course, only uploads with a derivable license will be allowed to remix (such as a creative commons license), else it would be all right reserved of the artist and the site won't let you derive.

So Thoughts/Comments/Critiques?

Usual TPF users or professional photographers aren't exactly the target audience for this project, more targetted at hobby and art/photography enthusiasts who do it for fun... but I frequent TPF so wanted to get some feedback from you good folks anyway The entire system from backend, frontend, storage, design is all home made and hand rolled. Hopefully I'll have time to work on it a bit more and release in a week or two.

I really like this idea! At first I thought maybe, then I downloaded "break neck speed" CR2 file. Thought that was nice to have access to if doing this type of project. Am not done but will upload when I get done.

What kind of scripting language(s) are needed to create this type of site? I saw jQuery and of course XHTML and CSS, but any others?

Also when you roll over the thumbnails it changes to display some text...I would use an easing effect or quicker fade to prevent the jump look/feel.

This must have taken quite some time to get together....Nice work..

******

Also, the signup and login should be on one page or the get started should be changed to "signup"....IMHO

Pretty cool. How much traffic can you handle? I could post the option for my high school photo students. I can't promise they would jump in, but I have several I can see enjoying this.

Neat concept, also since it allows you to see how others perceive an image.
I'll give a few a whirl.

Kind of related to the old "Photoshop Tennis", but much less destructive/chaotic.

I like the effect of your submission. Thanks for the suggestion, just changed the signup/getstarted and put in some easing effect, very true about the jumpyness. Hopeully that won't slow things down (still need to do cross browser testing, heh, not looking forward to that).

As far as languages, the backend is written in Python on Pylons, and the db is mongoDB (makes mysql seem like a joke performance wise), and amazon s3 for storage. Everything form idea to now took about a two weeks with a couple of hours per day to put the thing together, the python/pylons/mongo/s3 combination allows for very rapid development.

A lot :) MongoDB and AmazonS3 should make it take a beating, if not I can always spin up a new servers. That'd be awesome, it's open to any and everyone, hope they have fun.

Hope you enjoy it. Also nothing say it needs to be less destructive/chaotic, could very well be even more if the artists chooses to

Okay, just added a link in the class blog and posted on the board. We are just wrapping a photo editing unit with an emphasis on color. I hope some join and play around with what we have been studying.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, just applies all your suggestions along with others, I think close to a public beta now :)

Lot of redesigns, and now you can view the art history like a family tree Tree View example and also view photographs in high quality like a blog ArtStream example and have personal portfolios Portfolio view example
