I need a website...where do I start? - 04-07-2010, 03:55 PM

I just getting into the photography world and need to get a website put together. Problem is...I have no idea where to start. I think I've pretty much made up my mind that I don't want a flash site. Can anyone give me some advice on where to start? Thanks so much!!!

You can roll your own if you pay for hosting and domain registration - that's what I did with mine. It's hosted by IX Web hosting and I got an FTP address to load stuff to, a domain, email addresses and the ability to integrate with blogging software, databases, etc. Since I am the techie type and know a little HTML, I wrote my simple website myself and relied on LR for the galleries. What I like about this arrangement is that I can use it for general purpose storage, as I ftp images to it for clients, models, etc, all the time. It's a good deal if you want full control of your site, but it's not for everyone.

Good luck!

Photobiz. I have been with them for many years now (almost from their beginning) and have nothing but exceptional things to say about them.

Quality, affordable, and excellent service IMO.

I think if I took the time to sit down and learn, I might be able to do my own at some point, but I would need someone to teach me the basics. A good name drop is always welcome too. I'm trying to stay on the inexpensive side for now until business picks up and I can see if things will work out for me.

Portfoliositez.com

Their sites start at $20 setup and $5 per month.

Mine (Chuck Murphy Photography) took 10 minutes after I ordered, and it was up and running. Of course, I had to then upload the images and personalize it.....

Chuck - I decided to go with Portfoliositez.com but I'm having issues getting the Web Disk file to open. It says Ports 2078 and 2077 need to be allowed through the firewall. I can't figure out how to do this? Do you remember anything about this? It's when I try to do things in CPanel.

I noticed that their system takes 24-48 hours for everything to be established within their system. When I first had mine initialized, I quickly went into it and wanted to start adjusting things. I found I wasn't immediately able to. However, within 24-48 hours, I was able to do pretty much whatever I wanted within the realm of the package.

Just ask for help through their support system. They have been quick to respond to any questions I had. In fact with me, it was like they knew which follow-up question I would have and had already addressed it as well.
