I need a creative mind/design help - 01-11-2011, 05:19 PM

I've been searching various terms on here for days regarding web design and templates and such. I see the same names recommended...smugmug, zenfolio, portfoliosites, photobiz, bludomain, cmd, bigfolio, etc...Two things - Im not looking for a template. And I'm not looking for a flash website.

I can't find any actual recs on what im looking for.

I've got someone to write the code for me. I have hosting. What i want, is someone to discuss branding with me. Help me with the actual design aspect. The branding. How to represent a few aspects of myself online. I have basic ideas. I just need someone to take them one step further. Is there anyone out there that does this sort of thing?

Yeah, I'm a graphic designer. If you PM me details about what you're looking for, I can let you know if I can help... or pass you on to one of my talented friends.

I'm a graphic designer as well (I can design, but I don't code). As with photography, you get what you pay for. Find someone whose style you like and correspond with them to see if you can mesh and get your ideas together. Good luck.

I should add that I do some code. But it's mostly css with open-source site solutions like wordpress, etc... which I think is the best approach for anyone that has hosting, and want's absolute control over how their information/portfolio is displayed.

I personally rarely use wordpress for clients as a blog, but more of a content management system. plus they have some very powerful, customizable plugins for galleries and whatever other functions you want on your site... for free :)

^ ditto what Patrick said. Wordpress makes it really easy for a non-coding person to update a site, if you can get a template made (or modify an existing one like I did). Especially if you want to be able to update galleries or have a blog type format for your main site.

It seems like nowadays everybody with Photoshop & Illustrator is calling themselves a graphic designer. Be careful when choosing yours.

Rebecca - DEFINITELY worth it to work with a good graphic designer.... I tried for six months and had basically crap until I worked with the folks at Creative Leak... they were awesome.

They moved out of state though - and I don't think they are doing much at this time....

+1 to what Sonny said.

The complaints I hear photographers make (buy a DSLR and call yourself a professional photographer) is analogous to what I used to hear 15 years ago (buy yourself a Mac and PageMaker and call yourself a graphic designer).

:D

Rebecca, I can give you the contact info for the graphic designer that redid my website. It's still a work in progress (on my end, I need updated pics on there) but it's a huge improvement from what it was just a few months ago.

I didn't want what everyone else had, I liked the blogging style but not for my main page. Take a look at my website (below in sig) and at the bottom of the website is a link to her site (Erin Dempsey Design).

Also, I don't know if it matters or not, but she does have her Masters degree. I can't remember what it is but it's in that field, lol!
