Our new site...and B**domain crap! - 01-11-2011, 11:05 PM

After four years of a template based website, we finally took the plunge and went with a new blogsite from Flosites. I cannot recommend them enough - top notch and a pleasure to work with. Everything was exactly how we wanted it to go...until...we tried to transfer our domain name from the big template based website company (not red, not white - but, yes b**domain).

Ugh - what an experience that was. It took almost a month - and they were essentially camping on our domain name. They would not change the nameservers or allow us access to the domain registry - they would not transfer it to a new registrar...they tried to charge us for access to the registry (mind you this is our own domain name) and eventually they stopped responding to emails and support tickets - which is apparently the common practice for them once you say you are leaving.

So, to maybe help someone else out...here is what we did:
First off, our domain was registered in our name, but with all "their" contact info (address, email, & phone number). The domain name was registered through Domains Priced Right, which is managed by Wild West Domains, which is a reseller for GoDaddy. Yes, GoDaddy.

So we contacted GoDaddy to inform them that one of their resellers was performing an illegal practice of domain camping and not allowing us to change nameservers or contact information. The first guy, no wait - it was the second as well as the third guy at GoDaddy said that there isn't a lot you can do...perhaps file a complaint with ICANN. Anyhow - the fourth time I called back I finally reached someone willing to help. Apparently since the domain was in my name, all I needed to do was create a new account (free) with Domains Priced Right and then prove to them that I am the legitimate owner (send in scanned D.L., Business ID Forms) and complete the transfer request - and voila!

It took about 12 hours, but Domains Priced Right transfered the domain to our new account - we changed the nameserver information as well as the contact info for the domain - and we are d-o-n-e with B**domain!

I hope this helps someone else that may be dealing with their crap. After the outage the other day, I'm sure that there are people trying to get out of their shady business practice!

Anyhow - go check out our new site and let me know what you think!

If you own the domain, how could they stop you from pointing your DNS elsewhere?

This was likely a package where they bought hosting and got the domain free free life... You see it commonly now days. The problem with many hosts is that they register the domain for you, consequently, they have the account information for the registrar. It can be a real beast getting the reigns from them once they do but it can happen. Glad to hear it all worked out for you!

Yeah Chris, you basically nailed it. When we purchased the template they offered to register the domain for us (for free)...though it wasn't for life, we paid every few years for the registration. The registered the domain name in our name - but with all their contact info...we never had access to the domain registration info - that's why we couldn't change the DNS info.

They wanted us to pay a $15 fee to change the DNS fee...then they said that we hadn't paid for the domain name registration and sent us a bill for the past four years registration...once I sent them the screenshot of our Paypal receipt showing that we had already paid - they just stoppped responding. Lovely, huh?

oh okay good, I've got my site through *host. This is probably the 5th or 6th person that I've heard has had problems with *domain.
