Thanks for your support.

The hypocrisy here is amazing. I think I'll ask 7 photographers to shoot my wedding, post their final product here for a vote and only pay the winner. Sigh.

If you don't like it then don't use them... Easy.

Both sides are willing and are participating in this exchange on their own free will. Plain and simple.

Calling us hypocritical for using and/or considering a service like this is not cool.

As long as all parties agree to the terms, then I see nothing wrong with "crowd-sourcing". Programming sites have done this for years.

The premise is simple, the designer submits their work for the client to choose from. If the designer is good, they get paid. If the design does not meet the needs of the client, then they don't get paid. If a designer loses enough bids they might decide that the freelance market is not their strong suit.

Now if a photographer shoots a wedding for free on the premise that a web vote will determine if he gets paid, that is entirely up to the photographer.

First, thanks for the feedback. I have enough feedback and comments to make my decision. I had it narrowed down to 2 and it appears that there is pretty good support for both.

Abel,

I have now used 99designs twice and I like them. The first time I used them for a tee-shirt design and I ended up buying 2 designs from 2 different designers. Their process is great. You get to see the designs submitted and rate them and provide feedback to the designer for changes you would lke to see.

As far as the "hypocrisy", I don't see it that way. Just as an ad company will get pitched several ads, I am being pitched several design options. No one is forced to do it and if they win, they get paid pretty well. Since I (the customer) have to pay upfront, it protects the winning designer(s) so they know they get paid.

If you have design needs, I would recommend giving them a try. I simply do not have the time or real desire to do this work, so I pay someone else to do it.

I hope that helps.

David

P.S. As far as the crowd source article goes. Some of the designers may start with "canned" designs but most will make several changes per your request to make the design uniquly yours.

Abel I think if you replaced "TPF" with "ABEL" in your avatar it would look pretty cool!

As a visual designer myself, no.27 is the strongest and most flexible for all possible reproduction scenarios (print, shirts, online, etc.)
