Website / Domain name question - 08-02-2011, 10:33 AM

I have a newbie question….this is an area which I’m not very familiar with.

I currently have a website which is outdated and haven’t been updated for couple of years.

A year or so ago, I received a notification from Bludomain that my hosting with them will end (2 year subscription). At this point, I was already fed up with Bludomain’s service and the lack of support. I was also frustrated with how tedious it was to update my site.

Even though my supposed hosting has ended, my website is still active.

I would still like to keep my domain name / address but I like to start using something else. (Most likely a wordpress / blog type)

So, here I am with my question…If I go with another form of “website” and still use the same domain name, how will this affect the new website with the current website still active?

Hope I’m explaining this correctly…..

Hosting and domain registration are two separate things.

When you registered the domain, you point it to where your site is hosted. And you can edit this at any time if you move hosting.

Usually, when you setup with a new hosting company, they can assist with getting the domain registration updated to point to them.

So, when a client types in my domain name or search me via Google, etc., it'll direct to the new site only?

Is there a way to remove the old website?

It's odd that your host (Bludomain) still has your website online. When/if you change hosting, all you need to do is upload your new site, be it Wordpress or a custom site. Your old site will disappear and your new site will appear. Does that make sense?

That is if you own your own domain. BluDomain might own it depending on the contract you had, and may not release it to you.

Domain name is separate from BluDomain. I do own it.

I think the short answer to your question is once you set up a new site on another server the old site will not show up since the address will change. Your new host will have a procedure for you to follow to change the locator from the old domain to your new domain.
