If you are looking for a "system" to do a website on, I think Joomla is a good option to consider. It requires learning some things, but it's a small curve and you can get support free to cheap.

I spent some time playing around on one of my development domains and thought it might be helpful to show some examples of what you can do.

The first two was an initial play with a sepia color tone.

The second two go with the "traditional" black background.

For a live example you can check out Pix by Marlin Creek

The things aren't perfect, but it's simple enough to tweak things.

Depending upon when you stop by it may have changed from the last two above.

If you decide you want to try it out I can suggest SiteGround as a host. They do the installation of the default joomla site free (as well as any upgrades later on) and have been good to me. There's other things I like about them, but I'm not trying to push them... just felt like showing some examples of what can be done.

If anybody wants any details, let me know and I'll fill in the blanks that I can.

my host offers joomla, but its not included in my plan. I getting a little frustrated with my host as my site has been running pretty slow and people are complaining to me that it takes forever for my photos to come up some times

Most hosting companies will transfer a site from another company to their own servers... some for free, some for a small fee.

Not as easy as switching cell phone companies and keeping the same number, but still possible.

Nice what you've done... - 06-08-2007, 04:12 PM

...but I've not gotten things to 'click' the way I want with Joomla/Mambo. There must be some key foundational concepts of these CMS's that I'm just not getting. Simple things like getting something to show up at a specific place on a specific page give me fits.

Otherwise I like what you've done. I want so bad to use a "CMS" system for my web site and Joomla seems to have a ton of support and templates available. Guess I just need to play around some more.

One question. Is the gallery you're using an opensource module?

Thanks,
Jim

I do not get it either, I think we bought the template for the slideshow and the gallery is part of the original download of the software.... I think ! my sons been doing more of the gallery, I'm still trying to get an email link on the front.

Jim - the gallery plug-in I used is open-source.
Joomlaworks Simple Image Gallery

As far as getting things in the right place on the right page... for me it all depends upon the template I'm using and the location of the "positions".

Gary - the slideshow you have is also by Joomlaworks and it had to be purchased. I don't have any experience with that one... but from looking at their site I don't believe the gallery "mambot" that I'm using was included.

As far as getting rid of the "new images" title showing up... I'm not good enough to figure it out by looking at the source code so I'll have to ask a question...

- is the homepage set to show to a static content item or a component?

You can find out in the admin area by going to the "Menu Tab" and selecting mainmenue (assuming you haven't changed this) and then looking at the first published item. Underneath "type" what does it say?

Sorry for not being able to provide immediate answers, but feel free to ask whatever questions you need... I'll be first to say when you've reached my knowledge limit.
