code problem or plantform problems - 06-15-2007, 07:07 PM

I think that's my problem when i load my page back up on server.

i believe that the webmaster and i having different plantforms is the cause of the unwanted break lines in my code for my website.

and this all started when i found out that my code was mixed...from what i understand as being html and something else that doesn't like to be there.

i'm reading up on it..besides talking my first xhtml class to help me better understand what i'm not understanding.

can anyone help me with some more advice.

the visual problem would be that i can't see my page after loading it...
and i've tried saving both in macintosh, unix, and dos mode. none of them make a difference.

the only one solution i haven't tried is connecting my old pc to the internet and uploading it that way.

oh and i'm using Textwrangler on my Mac. to edit and upload.
i even tried editing with my pc and uploading with my mac. but that's not really doing anything different then opening another can of worms

http://www.libradophotography.com and it's the contact.php file i'm having problems seeing after uploading it.

Are you talking about libradophotography.com? All the links work except for "contact" (move contact.php back into the public_html folder with the other files to fix that).

Ah, that's why. /htdocs/ is the new public folder... I missed that on my first time through. Try it now...

Here's my stab at explaining it...

The main file is index.htm. When someone pulls up the website to look at it, the server looks in the /htdocs/ folder for any file named "index" and reads that first. In this case, "index.htm" tells the server to display a page that links to the About page at this address: http://libradophotography.com/about.php. The server translates that as /htdocs/about.php (replacing http://libradophotography.com/ with /htdocs/).

about.php has other links to other pages, and the files for all of those pages have to be in the same folder as about.php, otherwise it won't know where to look. The server only looks in the folder that you tell it to.

Did I do okay, or did I confuse you even more?

That's getting into server backend stuff that I don't have a good grasp of. The short answer is, I don't really know.

This Wikipedia article does a much better job of explaining it than I can - look under the "Path Translation" section.

When a file is requested by a browser, your server understands to first look in the htdocs folder, unless your server requires all .cgi files to be in a cgi-bin folder, then any file with that extension requested by a browser will trigger your server to look for it in there.

Generally, all other files would make your server look for them in the htdocs folder or a folder within it.
