David Ziser: Captured by the Light New Book -AWESOME! - 03-12-2010, 05:34 PM

I just wanted to say that this book has been a tremendous help to me. I have bought tons of books/videos about lighting, wedding photography, off-camera flash, etc. but this is BY FAR the best book I have read.

I attended his Digital Wake Up Call in Dallas and pre-ordered the book at that time. I just received 2 weeks ago and it was even signed by David.

Anyway, I just wanted to highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about wedding photography.

I like that he discusses the different types of traditional posing and also lighting patterns. He also talks about those things with off-camera flash that can make you stand out from most other photographers.

He also has some on-line training videos on Kelby training that were even more helpful but also covered in the book.

Definitely, the best read I have found since starting officially in biz 2 years ago!

He also is doing another webinar coming up. I did his last one and it goes over the book and he tells you lots of good information. I received the book too and I love it! I just wish I could read more of it at one time!!

I've got the book. It covers a lot of the sessions he does on KelbyTraining.com and a lot of the information covered on the seminar he did in SanAntonio last year. Good information...even for us hobbyist.

Thanks for the insight. Adding it to my Amazon cart as well. I was registered for the workshop but missed it. They sent me the materials, though.

I found it interesting that he suggest shooting everything at ~5.6.

Still going through a lot of it. I like a lot of his lighting. But yeah, he isn't gonna get me to stop down.

That is a very odd thing to say. I got curious and found this link which explains why he says that. Here's a quote.

At F5.6 I also knew what my flash working distance needed to be relative to my subject at the different power settings. Too many people fuss to many times about F-stops and shutter speeds and end up taking forever to get the shot. I suggest you lock onto one repeatable F-stop and know your distances for the various power settings of your off-camera flash. Enough said. Check out the following tutorial below to see what I mean. Enjoy! -David

Is it really that hard to calculate "I need to drop two stops on my flash (or I need to use 1/4th as much light) to shoot f/2.8?"

Looking at all the crappy work people have on their websites, I would have to say "yes, it's really that hard"

Good book. Makes someone think about their own technique.
