I learned everything I ever needed to know about off-camera speedlights for free from David Hobby on strobist.com. I've never sent TriCoast a dime, and seem to have a decent handle on how to use speedlights.

I've actually never heard of either of them.

You kinda missed my point, Chris. I'm not saying everyone that is out there selling stuff to new photographers is the devil.
What I am saying is that there are a TON of liars out there that are happy to swindle you out of your money without giving what was promised in the form of knowledge.

People who say that photographers selling their 'tools' is crap, only say that because they haven't figured out a way to do it themselves. Given the opportunity, I'm sure any of us would do the same thing if it meant making a buck. Because dont think for a skinny minute that if I could sell a 'how to pet photography' book or seminar, I wouldn't.

That's absolutely idiotic. Not everyone aspires to or is gifted at teaching or writing. No one is saying that ALL people doing this are evil. But there are a TON of wolves in sheep's clothing. Sadly, a lot of them are cloaking themselves in a religion to gain the trust of others.
I would not profess expertise in something I did not truly possess expertise in just to make a buck. No way, no how. My integrity is worth more than what a handful of workshops would make me. And yes, I do get paid to lecture on photography and specifically on photography/photojournalism ethics as well as teach private lessons.
That is what my rant is about. You have people that are shooting on green square teaching photography workshops and charging thousands of dollars. You have people that ARE NOT successful in photography that are teaching how to be successful in photography. They ARE successful in selling to photographers, not selling photography to customers. And they are a cancer in our industry.
