Well, 2nd shooting isn't really for "learning" (I know we are all always learning). I need my 2nd shooters to be able to stand on their own and I need to know I can trust that since they aren't going to be with me the whole time. I would start first (and it sounded like this is what you are trying to do) is to be a tag-along or assistant first and then move up to 2nd shooting once you have a wedding portfolio you can share.
I post often looking for this position either here or on my FB fan page for portrait sessions and weddings and I see quite a few others do too. Right now I am little slower than I was through the fall. I don't have any weddings going on right now. I have some portrait sessions, but there you don't get to shoot as much since you are helping with lighting. Weddings you have more freedom to do some actual shooting.
