Default Theft and liability insurance for wedding photographers - PPA? - 02-03-2011, 08:06 PM

Did you hear about the Liability and Theft insurance offered through Professional Photographer of America (PPA)?
Can you recommend it? I would like to have theft and liability.
Would I participate in the insurance program automatically once I become a member or I have to pay for it extra? I am a little bit confused? Please advise!

Thanks! Priscilla

you have to pay extra for it - depending on the amount of equipment - I carry 10k for equipment and liablity is a million and two million for coverage - runs about 450 annually

Yes, you have to pay extra for it. I have their liability and they sent me all the info on the theft, but I think I will wait on that one. It seemed pretty expensive. My liability cost $320 (or something like that) for the year.

I found cheaper cover through the Hartford. I called USAA and they referred me to the Hartford. I got liability and equipment coverage for under 500 a year. much cheaper than the $720 the PPA group quoted me.

If you don't mind, Suerenee, what did the quote cover?

Hartford quoted $700/yr for $10k in equipment + computer gear + liability.

for $514 I got $13K in equipment + 1 million in liability. Our computers are covered through our Homeowner's policy.

I get mine through TCP Insurance
TCP&Co.

They specialize in photography insurance.

2mm Liability
~18k camera gear
~2k in odds and ends (pocket wizard type stuff)
~5k in computers that travel (home computers cost less)
I think a few other things. Costs me about $700/year.

Well worth the cost, especially since I shoot sports.

This is weird! My insurance broker, using Hartford is quoting $700/yr for $13k equip + computer gear/1mil liabilities.

The cost did change when the broker found out it was for business vs. personal gear. I am wondering, for those who pay around $500, if that might be the difference?

I'm going to look into PPA and their insurance as a result.

Anyone that is buying the insurance and allowing the insurance company to think it is for personal instead of business might be in for a suprise when they make a claim and the insurance company investigates to find out they are running a business with the equipment, and refuse to pay, then you are out the equipment and all the premiums paid. Bad deal.

Marius, I'm waiting for a quote from the folks that do the insurance at PPA. I'll compare it to the quote from my broker and then I might get another one from yours and compare. The one nice thing about the one my broker is offering is they don't ask for an itemized list of Everything That I Could Possibly Count As Equipment. Of course, that's another flag to me, but that's just one more reason to ask for another quote!

I don't think that's a good thing. I want them to have an itemized list of all my gear plus the replacement cost.

What is your deductible per incident?

Well, technically they would have had it. They wanted copies of receipts I think. One place wanted me to write it out. Well...that didn't sound like fun :D

That isn't insurance for replacement cost. When you insure something for replacement cost, it is the current market value of that item, not the historical value that the item cost.
