Austin E sesh ideas? - 06-14-2011, 06:14 AM

I have an engagement session in Austin tomorrow, and my bride doesn't want to go to the typical spots. I used to live in Austin, but wasn't doing photography then, so I have no clue where to go. Any suggestions? I will be going early and driving around, but I'd love any help I can get. Thanks!

Leslie, what kind of environment is she into? You could just walk down south Congress if you like the urban thing (lots of color). Mayfield park is free (see the Austin section of the forum) and it's pretty. Laguna Gloria is beautiful and has a bunch of different areas for different looks but lots of local brides to get married there so maybe she's seen a lot of that venue already.

Call Cathedral of Junk to check it out.

Check out Toy Joy.

Blanton Museum lets you do pics in the foyer area (I'd call first).

There's lots...but it depends on what she likes I guess.

Hey, I sent her the Cathedral of Junk, and someone else told her about Toy Joy. It's really hard to judge her. She wants unique, but she doesn't like quirky. She wants to stay away from Congress and the Capitol building area. I know she is contacting some marinas because she wants something on a sailboat, but that will only be a short part of it. I will def. tell her about Laguna Gloria and Blanton. Thanks a ton!

"Mellow" urban: Galleria mall in Bee Caves (fountains, flowers, doorways).

St. Edwards is supposed to be pretty. It's summer so not so crowded (flowers, pretty overhangs). Same for UT campus (Blanton museum is on UT campus).

Not been but I hear it's pretty: trails at the Mueller Development (outdoor art, unique landscaping).

Gorgeous but costs: Wildflower Research Center in south Austin. It's beautiful not just for the flowers but the wonderful architecture.

The area around Palmer Events center is pretty but you'd have to get there really early because it's got very little shade.

I think you'd do well at a place like UT because you'd get a bunch of different environments within a short walk. While it might be "typical" with a good eye, you can make it look unique.

If I think of any more I'll pass them along.

Re Cathedral of Junk....I am pretty sure he closed it down. We did our engagement photos there in Oct of 2009 and shortly after the City came in and made a huge deal about permits. Last I heard he had closed it to the public.

Just know if you go you'll need OCF--that was the big mistake on the part of our photographer and our photos were flat :(

I remember your images, Susan! Thanks for the info. She has actually decided to do them in Hutto and near her venue, Taylor Mansion.

Great area! There is actually some green still out towards Hutto! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks, again, for all of the suggestions! We ended up in Taylor, Texas. Cool little town. Here are the images: Heather + Travis (several added)
