More like packing tips lol.
I just booked my first destination wedding (not first wedding just destination) I have never traveled with my gear.

The wedding is at the Riu palace resort in cabo, Mexico if that helps.
I'm just nervous about traveling with gear.

Carry your body, lenses, and their accessories as carry-on, check the non critical stuff.

When I travelled to China, I packed most of my gear, batteries, chargers, cables, laptop, external harddrive, lenses, bodies, memories, and a flash.

1. Always always always carry-on your camera gear. You'll need the appropriately sized bag for this - Think Tank is an awesome option, but there are plenty more. If you end up having to get on a small plane that doesn't have standard sized overhead compartments, do a gate check so it doesn't have to go through the hands of the neanderthals who work in luggage.

2. Insurance is crucial. Intl. insurance coverage to be more precise.

3. Have a blast

Namaste!

You need to contact the Mexican Embassy and find out what you need to do to legally work there for a gig. I think you need to pay a small fee and fill out a form.

I went to Cozumel, Mexico last month for a wedding gig and I didn't need to fill out any form or pay any fee, because the wedding was hosted at the Hotel where thery're staying. He'll be ok, IMO!

i worried about the business thing as well, but i was out of luck anyway - you have to have your passport for 1 year before you can get a license to do business in mexico.

we did our first destination this summer as well, we each took one body, 2 lenses, 2 flashes - and memory card backup - that's it. it was great.

there is an online story of this woman who was a second shooter for someone else in mexico - and she was basically escorted from her hotel at gunpoint - passport was taken - and about 5k extorted from her for not having that business license. it's scary business down there. i'll look for this link to see if i can find it.

Do not contact the embassy or ask any questions. Tell your clients that you are a guest with a camera and you are just helping for free. That and go buy a think tank security or international so you can keep your gear locked up in your room.

I know it depends on your insurance and what they cover. I know it is possible, but not sure how much it will cost you. Tom was bragging earlier that his gear was covered in what was considered a war zone (or some kind of conflict zone, Israel and some other places on a cruise). Don't know his company, but it was his standard insurer and he didn't have to go out and get supplemental. You might want to see what your current policy covers.

you cannot check batteries for your camera they will be taken from your bag - carry on all equipment - travel as light as possible. In Mexico do not leave your equipment in the hotel room EVER unless there is a safe in your room. If you are using pro equipment and you lie and say you are just a friend if asked that could get you into deep trouble. They are smart enough to look you up online if they get your passport - which they will ask for... Trust me...You do not want to jack with the Mexican police - in Mexico they can detain you for any reason or no reason... make sure you are legal when you go in there....
