Need a female second Shooter - October 8 - 09-30-2011, 04:15 PM

Hello Guys,

I am in need again. This time I need a female second shooter for this coming Saturday the 8th of October. If your available and are willing to come down to Galveston for eight hours and be excellent at what you do, and make money in the process then please leave your contact info below with a website of your work, or a blog. You must have shot weddings in the past. This is not for any newbie wanting to build their portfolio, I need someone who can do what I ask and know how to do it.

Also, you will be shooting with my CF cards which you will hand over to me at the end of the night. This is a contract job. Nothing more. All rights will belong to me.

I will be paying $200-$250 for the night.

Thanks for your response. Dave Barron

with your requirments you might need to raise your pay scale - most experience photogs I know willing to second shoot go for at minimum 50 an hour - good luck with your search...

especially if you won't even let them keep the photos for their portfolio.

I have seen this type of posting lately in this forum, which cannot be good for the community. At least let the 2nd shooter keep the copy of the pictures and ask to use low resolution with watermark for portfolio sample.

All - lets keep on topic and not question the rate being offered.

Hey Guy,

I can understand your comments but I run a business and I need to feed my family. Why $30 per hour for photography is not enough, please tell me where your getting your information from. If you expect me to give you all my business for second shooting you can forget it. The most I have ever payed for a second shooter is $400 and that was someone with years of experience and we shot a 12 hour wedding. They even flew from NY to do it with their own money. These comments I see lately on here honestly are very unproductive and not helpful for me getting a second shooter, and are uneducated. If yall have any consideration for your fellow photographers you should keep these comments in Private Mail. As it is now yall have ruined my chances for getting a second shooter with the budget I have. Luckily one of my fellow friend photographers jumped in and offered to help. I can't help it if my wife who is usually my second shooter has to take care of our 6 month old. And if you can not respect my budget of $30 per hour then don't comment at all.

I think many of the comments had more to do with the fact you were paying an apprentice rate, but won't let the shooter keep any pics for thier portfolio. Your proposition, regardless of price, was all take and no give. I've found that I do much better when I try to keep negotiations win-win. The most any comments here might cause would be a potential second shooter getting more aggressive when negotiating rates with you. We all have bills to pay, including your second shooter. Who knows, someone may really need the cash and jump at the rate. Good luck with your shoot this weekend.
BTW, a round trip ticket to NYC is way more than $400. Whoever flew in from New York to help was doing you a favor, not conducting a business transaction.

Being a second shoot is not a business or a means for income. If someone is second shooting to make a living I would understand, but second shooters for the most part are shooting because they love to shoot and want keep up their skills. The fact that I can pay them is just icing on the cake. In the real world, photographers who have been shooting for a while understand the importance of copy right and ethics with images shot at another persons wedding. If I allow my second shooter to keep the images of a wedding that I booked with my clients with my business name on it and then see those images on their website, in their facebook, in competitions, that would be very uncool. When someone works for me that is what they are doing, working for me and not for themselves. Most of the second shooters that I hire are super excited to work with me and are eager to learn and have fun. If I ever went to second shoot for another photographer in need I wouldn't even ask for compensation. I am there to help out with what ever they needed help with, I am not there to get and take for myself.

As far as the babysitting is concerned, we have taken those things into consideration, and that is not an option at our sons age. Remember every person is different and you cannot judge someone without getting the proper information.

Also, to answer your question about the NY photographer, he was not doing it for profit. He had a free weekend and loves to shoot, just like most of the other people in this forum.

I think this is fairly standard. It is the primary photographer's studio, their portfolio, their name, their experience, etc that made it possible to book the job.

Their name and business is on the line. If the job is screwed up, they will face the consequences.

With great responsibility also comes great privileges.

Personally, I shoot/assist for another photographer often (usually twice a month or so), and she pays me similar to what you are offering. I use her equipment, her memory cards, and I do not get rights to her photos. However she often credits me on facebook as we are both listed as the photographers. I'm essentially an employee of her company.

I am fine with this arrangement. I have no desire to become a wedding photographer, and so I don't care about building a portfolio of shots. If I ever stopped working for her and wanted to work for another photographer, I'm sure she would highly recommend me. I can't second shoot for most people though since my personal equipment sucks.

I wouldn't work for her for free because all of my photography gear is bought off of what I make helping her out, but I don't mind what she pays me because I am learning a lot and I enjoy myself.

Not everyone is the same, not everyone fits every opportunity. However, you shouldn't bash someone looking for help just because they aren't paying what you would expect or giving the same conditions that you would want.

And as a side comment - I am brand new to this forum and frankly I would expect to see a more collaborative environment.
Whoever does assist as second shooter would mostly do so to help a photographer in need and have fun taking pictures. The way I see it, it is more of a networking opportunity with another photographer and a 'pay it forward' attitude than a business.
We all need help from time to time - so how about we help each other if we can, instead of acting like the 'price police' and complaining about rates and copyright agreements?

I really don't see what he is offering as way off. What I think is happening is that a lot of fairly new photogs that are getting into weddings are asking an exorbitant amount of money to do so, even though they lack the skills. I've seen some charging $400 and way up, and I'm like, "seriously??". Some of these photographers only have a couple of weddings that they've shot. One of the top primary shooters in Dallas charges around $500, some more, but I would never offer more than $250 for someone that doesn't have a lot of experience and is more than capable of being a primary shooter. If I am ever in need of a second shooter (which is not very often), I pay them $250 for 8hrs. When I second shot for a couple of people, I charged $350 and another $250, and I have quite a bit of experience. Now, I do allow them to keep the images and use them, but a lot of photogs do not.

And you know, he is offering to pay. I have seen several photographers on here asking for second shooters and they are not will to pay them. No one jumped on them for this, and they got people willing to do it.
