List of shots? - 06-21-2007, 09:57 AM

I have been asked to shoot a friends wedding in April 08. I'm trying to get together a list of shots that I can make sure get taken at the wedding and the reception. Does anyone know a good place to find it?

Thanks in Advance!

I am not sure of a place you can look to find a list of shots... I think for each couple certian things are of more importance. I would talk to you friend and ask what shots are important to them. Most brides will have a timeline .... apx what time everything will happen from the ceremony to the cake cutting etc. I would also cordinate with the DJ because he usually has this same list.
Make sure you get a list of exactly what formals they want (ie... bride groom dad mom and uncle doe)
I could be totally off on what you were asking.. lol... hope this helps

Send a PM with your e-mail or send e-mail to curbertsgirl at yahoo with "List" in subject line. This list is just a starting point to give you some idea of what you must get and what you get if possible.

Send me a PM and I will send you our "Wedding Portrait Wish List". These are generic images that a bride might want. We cross out all that don't apply to a particular wedding then we write in the names of the parties on the ones that are left. We have a disclaimer that says we will get all the ones that we can, but we don't promise any one shot.

Good point Don, I forgot to mention that in my post above because I do the same thing....you NEVER promise every shot...this is just a guideline

Excellent advice, and I would add that you explain to them that because their wedding is such a dynamic event, even some of these may not be accomplished, but you will certainly try do do all they ask.

Have you shot weddings before? Is this a friend you want to keep? Keep in mind that if you haven't shot weddings before that this is one of the most stressful types of photographic assignments. Anything can happen, and often does. So you need to be ready for everything. That means you need two of all of the major items, 2 camera bodies, enough lens to have backups for critical lens uses, backup lighting. Extra batteries, memory cards, etc. The formals almost always need to be shot with external lighting such as external strobes. I would say at the very minimum at least 2 lights plus large umbrellas for an even spread of light over fairly good size groups (I use 4 heads and a Novatron powerpack). You'll also need a flashmeter. I would suggest getting someone to assist you also with their own backup camera. Line up someone to be the gofer person to get the different groups together.

Keep in mind that at most weddings you won't be using flash during the actual ceremony, so have a good tripod and know the ISO limits of your camera. I usually use a 70-200 F2.8 lens on a solid tripod at ISO 400 or ISO 800 and get good results.

As for checklists, there are so many of these, that you can find them in a instant. Just go to Google and type in "wedding photography checklist" without the quotes. The very first result provides a good check list.

You also need to find out whether they expect post wedding bridal formals and things like that. Also are you doing the reception? For reception use, you usually need a good on camera shoe mount flash, or one that is bracket mounted and some sort of a light modifier (Google "better bounce card").

You also need to know in advance what they expect. Do they want finished shots or will you just give them a CD of images for them to print. Do they want a wedding book? Are you to provide that? These and hundreds of other questions.

If you haven't done a wedding before, then I suggest you spend several hours with a professional who has and talk over the whole situation.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Roger

when do you give this list to the client?

do you give it to them when you book them - which might be up to a year ahead?

or do you wait till the month before the wedding?

I give it to them as soon as they've signed so they have time to modify it.

OK, I just read one of these check lists. How many of you guys are shooting one of these events? Yikes! I really did not understand the level of complexity there is in photographing a wedding. Honestly, if you pull that off, you deserve every penny.

It's not just having the list. Having the list is kinda like having the menu for a gourmet meal. Just because you have the list, and minimal equipment, does not mean you can put it together.

Things don't just appear, ready for you to push the button. You have to know who, what, when, where, why, and how. What if they don't happen? What if they happen out of order? What if you aren't ready when they do happen?

What if some of the people will not cooperate? What if the camera doesn't function? What if the flash doesn't? What if you can't remember which card has been used? What if everyone stands between you and your subject, so they can get the picture?

What do you do when the bride says yes, but the groom says no?

The real list is endless. Hope you are a Boy Scout. Be prepared.

Hehehe, Howard.. you said it.

I use my checklist as a guide to the day as much as an actual check list... some things on it aren't appropriate for all weddings (not everyone has a unity candle, for instance)... the only time I refer to it regularly is during the "formals" ... cuz if I don't, I *will* forget. LOL
