Second Shooter Processing Their Own Pics - 08-09-2007, 11:47 AM

I have been shooting for another photographer as a second shoter for awhile now. I just burn her a CD of the original files and give it to her. She now is asking me if I would like to process my own images (around 300) and just give her the final version. She also asked me what I would charge extra. I'm currently paid between $100-150 to second shoot. I have no idea what I should charge extra for processing...I'm thinking maybe $75-$100 extra? What do you think? Too much? Too little?

I think it is to little. This takes time and energy. Think about how long you feel it would take to process 300 images. Are you just doing simple color correction or full work-ups. Either way determine what it is you will be doing and how many hours it will take you. Divide by your rate and then see just how you feel about the amount charged. Personally, I would be thinking along the lines of $300.00, dollar an image. If you spend 5 minutes a photo doing touch ups, crops etc then that equates to $12.00 per hour. Not alot in my book but wouldnt be a bad start for a part time side job. I am sure there are others here that have a much better grasp on processing charges than I do but with my busy schedule/life, I would want it to be worth my time.

I would probably be doing full editing, but I use Lightroom for the most part and only do special editing in PS. It usually takes me around 12-15 hours to edit one of my weddings (800 final images) so I figure it would take me 5-6 hours to do 300 images....at $15/hour that would put me at around $100. I guessed I just answered my own question! I would like to be paid $300 though.....

I'm not going to get into what a good rate for a second shooter is (ranges from $25-50 per hour) or what their responsibilities should be. As a "benchmark", there are companies out there that process images, taking RAW files doing basic color, density, exposure correction for each image and they charge in the $0.20 range per image.

You may be better off negotiating a higher rate for shooting than just tacking on an additional fee for the processing.

Sarah, I viewed your website and I think you have and did some great PP editing.

IMO, I think $300 is good price to ask for (If that's what you want).

Thanks everyone! It turns out she just wants me to do cropping and color correction. I quoted $125 and she was happy with that. It will come out to about $20/hour which I think is fair.
