The page layout design took the longest really (probably over 20 hours sorting through all the photos and laying out the pages), and then getting my sister to approve and making sure it flowed right. The next was learning HOW to make the book (week long class 5 hours a day). Once all the materials are in place and the pages printed it isn't too bad I guess, maybe 12 hours of actually putting it together, not including letting the book sit under weight so that it will close flat, and the stopping and starting between phases (sewing sheets together, stopping to get it cut down, getting the hardcover boards the right size, try not to get glue all over everything, putting the extra think leather around the book (couldn't find thinner white leather!), cleaning up the inside of the cover, letting the book sit under other heavy books...).
@Janice, the professor that teaches is Keith Owens from UNT (
http://www.owensbooks.com/). He only does this about once a year, usually it's a Maymester class through the university, but this year he did it outside the school at
Endorphin Studio. I'm not sure when he'll do it again, but you could shoot an email and ask or maybe he can give you some info so that you could try to learn on your own.
@Tom, the material cost wasn't too bad ($80 on tools, $200 on supplies and $40 for printing on this particular project), though true bookbinding leather is pretty expensive. I think I'd have to charge at least $1000 to make it worth my while, but I'm still new at this so I still have a high probability of screwing up
