Nice images, Leslie. They seem to be a little less "processed" than usual. Did you do something different, or is it just me?
Anyway, I lke the set!

Thanks, Tom! Well, I tend to overprocess some of my bridals and e sessions, but for weddings (unless it's a vintage wedding), I mostly do straight forward processing. I did add a few that were a bit different in the processing, but most are not.

More nice stuff here, as usual. I like the candids, during the preparation and dancing. You've captured some nice expressions, there. You've shown the mood and some of the character of the day. I tend to like those types of shots, because they provide more of the story.

I'm sure with a little photoshop work that OU logo can be removed.

Lovely! I also love the group shot of the girls, the posing is fantastic.

Since I know nothing about shooting receptions I'm curious - would you mind giving a short explanation of how you light the reception shots? Curious if you use on or off-camera flash. I haven't been to a whole lot of weddings but all the ones I've been too, the photogs have used on-camera flash but I've read a lot on here about using off-camera flash at receptions. I want to get better at using my speedlite on the camera for event photography but I'm not making much headway - they end up looking more like P&S stuff than what you have here - either over or under-flashed. :)

Thanks, Amanda! For receptions, I always use on camera flash, usually bounced up, sometimes with my bounce card pulled out. I use typically ISO 3200 (occasionally 1600 if there is plenty of light, and if it's really, really low light, I go up to 4000). My f stop is always at its widest, f4, and the shutter is usually at 1/60th, occasionally 1/50th. Hope that helps!

Questions - 12-30-2010, 10:37 PM

Hi Leslie,

I really appreciate you uploading so many images because it shows the diversity of your skill. Couple of questions:
– On the arial shot of the bride and groom leaving (in black & white), only the bride is focus (comparatively). How did that happen? Or was this via processing?

– I would really be interested in your flash/lighting set up for the reception dancing. But I suppose if you told me, you would have to kill me.

Thanks for the inspiration.
Michael

Oh, I'm still trying to decide how I feel about the back lit shoe photo. At least it got my attention.

Hi Michael!

Thanks! For the aerial shot, that was by my second shooter. He was on the balcony and (I think) using his 70-200. I asked him to get a panning shot of the b and g when they were exiting. So, he focused on them (albeit she is just in focus most likely b/c it was shot at 2.8), used a somewhat slow shutter, and panned. We never do this type of stuff in post processing.

As far as flash/lighting setup, all of these are mine at the reception, and I just used my 580 EXII on camera, bounced off ceiling. I might have pulled out the little white bounce card that is on the flash. My settings were most likely iso 3200, f stop 4, and shutter speed 1/60. Hope this helps! I never do off camera flash. Occasionally, my second shooter does.

Lol on the shoe shot!

Thanks, again!

Thanks for the info, Leslie. But I am going to be greedy and ask one more follow up question. Why do you use ISO 3200 with flash?
