Unplanned shot

This is a discussion on Unplanned shot within the Weddings forums, part of the Showcase category; I was testing exposure and grabbed this shot. I think it kind of works, from a photojournalistic perspective....

Indeed...t's all about the shoes.

I like it...the crop and reflection work for me.

I would consider it as a "filler" shot as it does not really have anything to identify it as wedding related. The reflection of the guy is a nice addition. Under my personal criteria, if it were my shot, I would toss it. If I had noticed the reflection on the back of the camera, I could probably have developed a "keeper" around that attention grabber with a couple more shots.

Thanks! Yeah, I like the shoes being in it.

Alton, it is a filler shot from an engagement shoot. Keep in mind, I came from a photojournalism background, and this just kind of reminded me of those days.

I really like the story I read into it and the reflection is an added bonus. A young married couple getting ready for a night on the town and she asks do you think these shoes go with this dress and of course you see him pondering his response because whatever he says will probably be wrong. Just my opinion but a great off the cuff capture and love the b&w

Sigh.. even your accidents are cool.

Seriously, I like it a lot. Linda's comments are a great interpretation... and it would make a wonderful lead in page in a wedding album...

Well at first look I didn't like the image.
- He is not looking at the shoes or the girl but at the couch. I thought it was about the couch somehow. Didn't really notice the shoes, but I am a guy.
- Her head cut off and his present in the image bothered me. I immediately went to his face and then went to all the blank space at the top of the image, then to the top mirror reflection of the curtains. Never got back to couch. So I was lost wondering what the central idea was in the image.

After reading the posts I see what you are saying. To make the image only involve the shoes and people, I would crop the image to eliminate distractions. Crop the top to eliminate the blank space and his head, making it like hers. This also removes the top mirror and curtain reflection. Crop the bottom to eliminate her bulging knee.
Now you have an image where the shoes and people are more central to the image. His reflection now looks like he is looking at the shoes. I also darkened the couch and wall area between them to keep the balance of light and dark equal so it won't overpower the darker area where your subjects are located.

Do wives really ask that? Perhaps she was asking, "Do these shoes make my behind look bigger?"

Seriously, there are times when unplanned grab shots have worked, but pardon me for saying this is not one of them. Even with the cropping, which helps, the angle and area the high heels point to cannot be changed. The bulge in the dress does not help either... I would not include it.

Honest, I am not a dirty old man..
:) . after 30+ years of shooting weddings, I looked closely at every shot I took, that was planned or unplanned to make sure that someone, someday will not notice a "mistake".

Thanks, Wayne and Brad!

I like that crop, Michael!

Oh well, Ben. This was just a throw in shot for them, so if they like it great, if not, doesn't really matter as they have many others. I still kind of like it.

I like the original shot the way it is, not a fan of chopping both heads off. It's a bit enigmatic, but thats not a bad thing IMO. Some of my favorite shots of models have been "test exposure" shots where the models are relaxed and not "posing".
