First Engagement Session - 10-20-2011, 01:02 PM

Critique: NC:

Hey guys!

This was my first engagement session for my good friends Mercy & Jay (second time ever shooting people). I shot these w/ my Rebel T2i & starter kit lens and have been shooting in manual. I know a 50mm lens would have probably made these images a little better, but this is all I had to work with right now.
Thank you! :)

Nice work and a few suggestions - 01-05-2012, 04:39 PM

In #1 I find the large stone column a very heavy element in the composition and a bit distracting from the couple. The leading lines from the column to the couple are nice, but I would crop or recompose a little. Also, it looks like you were at a wider angle on your lens and the column shows the telltale distortion. Also would have kept their feet in the shot rather than cutting off at the ankles.

#2 is nice and an interesting composition but the horizon is just slightly off -- either go more for the "tilt" look or make sure it is level.

#3 Love, Love this shot! Would have perhaps gotten rid of the pole on the far right to avoid distraction, but overall a great pic.

#4 Nice colors and exposure balance with enough detail in the sky. A shallower depth of field would separate them a bit more from the background. Also, be careful with the strong leading lines of the roof and architectural details intersecting their heads -- can be a little distracting. Try small moves (a few inches or a couple of feet) up/down or left to give you other compositional possibilities.

#5 The mood of the black and white with her expression is great! Horizon is just a little off in this one too.

Did you shoot any close-ups/tighter shots? For engagements you usually want to provide variety in framing and orientation (portrait/landscape) to accommodate the couple using the shots for many purposes or multi-image compositions on announcements, save-the-dates, newspaper, web sites, display at their reception, etc.

Thank you very much for all of your critiques! :) I definitely see what I need to work on now. I did shoot some close ups which I gave to the bride and groom, but I wasn’t very happy with most of them because I was having a little trouble with the reflection in their glasses.
