Engagement session from March 30 - 03-31-2006, 03:53 PM

My first wedding of the year is next week, I feel so rusty. This couple is so cute, I am photographing their wedding next Wednsday, but for fun, we did an engagement session yesterday. The groom is very shy, and this was in part, a way to help him relax with me, before next week :) The bride is American, the groom is English, complete with very pale complexion. The sky was horrible, typical England day, gloomy, overcast, and it was drizzly at the beach. Then to make matters worse, I forgot to check my white balance setting, (I had last used the tungsten setting, lol), so the first few beach shots were really strange looking. I give credit to the couple tho, it was freezing out, and they were really up for anything, lol.

I kept to mostly tight shots, trying to keep the sky out, because it was just so nasty looking. I really wanted to stretch my 10-22 lens, but this wasn't the day for it

I am trying out some ideas, and they may not work, so CC welcome. There may be different versions of the same image, as I am trying to decide if things are working for me.

Ring - 03-31-2006, 04:19 PM

Just wondering if she had here engagement ring on her right hand or are the pictures reversed? Looks like they were having fun at the shoot.

She was wearing it on her right hand, I thought it odd too, but left it like that, in case there was a reason, lol.

Thanks Jesus, I am trying to decide if the 'greenish' cross process for the corner shot is a bit too much. I am trying to do some funky and different things for this couple, but have decided to leave both there, and let them deal with deciding, lol.

It was extremely gloomy and grey out, so it's surprising there was any colour to work with at all. I did use a reflector a bit, and fill flash, with a yellow stofen, hoping that would help simulate warm sunlight.

It was a fun day :) We went to three different locations, and it, it took about 3 hours.

Thought I could pitch in  - 03-31-2006, 07:26 PM

I have not posted for while, but wanted to mention something about the ring on the right hand. BTW, the pictures are beautiful! Not any two look the same and many people love to have such a great variety.
Anyway, about the ring. I'm from Russia and in European engagements it is known to put the ring on the bride-to-be right hand before the wedding. And on the wedding day both the engagement ring and the wedding ring are put on the left hand. I did not even have an engagement ring. This for us was very much an American tradition and not having a lot of money (and me not caring for jewelry too much [shocker!], yes I'm a woman ) we decided to stick with our tradition back then and get only a wedding ring. So I had it on my right hand until we got married. On the day of the wedding my groom had put the wedding ring on my left hand where it has been since. I did get an engagement ring later, about 5 years later, but it was not as big of a deal as it would be in a traditional American family.

So hope that clarifies the confusion about the ring on the right hand. I'm thinking since they are in Europe maybe that was the reason for that fact. It was the reason we did it, just different traditions. Not a big deal.

Olga

Thanks Adam and Olga, :)

About the ring, I don't know if that applies for this couple, since she's American, and he's English. I think I am going to end up asking her, lol. I always believed the ring was worn on the left hand, until the wedding day, then you moved it to the right hand, until after the wedding band was slipped on the ring finger. Then later you move the engagement ring back to the left hand again, with the wedding band closest to your heart. I don't wear a band of any kind anymore, I can't be bothered,,lol. I would appreciate a nice lens instead ;)

Those are AWESOME Teri. Too many faves to pick just one, but I especially love the series by the colorful doors, but also love the ones in the flower garden, and the black and whites.........hehe.....told you too many faves.
Great Job!

Thanks Cindy :) I stressed so much the night before, because I knew the light was going to be bad, and it was going to be freezing out. I will post an unprocessed shot later to show you how really icky it was out, lol.

Next week, we are shooting at the Regent's Park, The Tower of London/Tower Bridge, a boat on the Thames, and down by Westminster (Big Ben), and Westminster Abbey. So hopefully we will cover all that in a mad dash around, lol. I am packing alot of energy bars, lol.

I am wondering if we can squeeze in Abbey Road, since it's not far from the Regents Park. Not sure yet.

Which side to wear the ring on varies by European country. In Germany the engagement ring is worn on the left hand, while the wedding ring is worn on the right hand.

I LOVE This one!!!!

It really gives you a sense of who they are and how playful they are.

Great job at capturing the spirit of this couple!
