What are some of the places you are referring to that, say in 2008, began requiring permits?

I haven't heard of any. Just curious.

Is a permit required to shoot say bridals, or just shoot around while visiting the location?

I shoot around that part of The Woodlands quite a bit: Town Green Park, Waterway, Market Street. Very photographer/photography friendly. No permit is required to shoot there unless you are wanting to reserve specific areas of the park for your session.

If you're shooting bridal, engagements, etc...and not blocking/preventing other visitors from enjoying the park for extended lengths of time, they won't say anything. The "courtesy representatives" walking around there are extremely friendly and helpful. Even around market street, the property manager is extremely understanding. Obviously, the area is not a photographer's personal studio so as long as they're not preventing others from enjoying the area, they're very supportive.

That's great, Dre. Have fun.

From I45/Rayford Sawdust:
I45 North
Exit Woodlands Pkwy
Right on Six Pines Dr. (2nd stop light)
Left on Lake Robbins (2nd stop light)
-Park is on left between The Woodlands Pavillion & Montgomery Library

Wait, wait, wait... Permits? WTF? So we can't take photos in/of public (read: taxpayer-funded) places without applying and/or paying for a freakin' PERMIT? This offends me on some level, but I can't say that I'm surprised.

I'm kinda new to this, and I haven't been out on many shooting adventures yet.

OK, the way I understand it is you are free to take all the pictures you want right up to the point of making it hard for someone else to enjoy the park. It would be no different than if you had twenty people there at some picnic tables for a family reunion, you really need a permit to "hog" all the picnic tables. If you rope off a section of the park to take photos and haul in a bunch of lighting gear, you need a permit. If it is you and a model with no lighting gear, you do not need a permit.

Certain areas may require a permit for any commercial use however, but as far as I know never for private use.

I'd recommend that you do some searching on this and other forums before you get your shorts in a bind. There ARE many private and public places that require photographer permits for some kinds of shooting, and for some kinds of photography.
There are also lots of places that have no photography restrictions. A few irresponsible photographers who trash a place, or disregard the sanctity of a location are what causes the rules/laws to be enacted.

Ok, ok, that makes sense. I am just a hobbyist, so I guess this doesn't apply to me. For a moment there I couldn't believe what I was hearing (ok, reading)!
